What Makes a Text Awesome?

Advice for the sender and recipient of everyday text message conversations

Awesome Use of Ellipsis….

Ellipsis are pretty awesome because if used in the wrong context, they can be completely condescending and harshly abrupt. The point of ellipsis is to add a small pause or hesitation in the middle of a sentence in a text, or at the end of a sentence for a self-deprecating emphasis (similar to that of the straight face actually). Ellipsis are awesome because they almost say “Hey I know I’m making a funny joke but I am trying to sound like I’m not.” It is an interesting tactic, and one that is commonly messed up.

For example:

This is not reassuring encouragement for the text. Instead it looks like this poor kid’s mother has no faith in his academic abilities…at all.

So whether you are wishing your friend luck on a dance performance or wishing your child luck on an exam, ellipsis at the end of “encouraging” statements like these take away all encouragement. Not awesome.

Use them when you’re trying to be funny or make fun of yourself. Like a text like “Of course I would miss the bus after sitting there for a half hour…” That one kind of leaves it to the receiver to decide why you missed the bus as well as laugh at your carelessness.

Have fun with the ellipsis. Sometimes they are a good way to break up really long texts…that are full of a lot of different thoughts. Or a text that is in list form…with lot’s of ideas…that are all present in one text.

You get the idea.

Beware of the wrong context. But be creative. Awesome…
